  • Roe is gone – come together and fight

The Supreme Court just overturned Roe v. Wade, and while abortion currently remains legal in California, this cannot stand. The time to hit the streets is now.

Even worse, Justices Thomas and Kavanaugh stated in their concurring decisions that federal protections for same-sex relationships and marriage and contraception may also be subject to reversal. Members of DSA San Diego must mobilize against this violent attack on abortion and reproductive rights, queer rights, trans care, and so much more.

*** Gather with DSA members and members of our community tonight, June 24 at 7 pm at Waterfront Park, 1600 Pacific Highway. ***

They have the courts, but we have the people.

Free abortion on demand and without apology. Nothing less.

    In solidarity,

    DSA San Diego

  • Tenant Union Organizing in San Diego

In recent years, tenant organizing has emerged as a major terrain of class struggle. Concentration of ownership in the hands of corporate landlords, inflation, and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic have heightened the hardship tenants face across the country. In a housing system where profit matters more than our quality of life, we need a tenant movement to effectively combat the landlord class, secure decent housing for all, and build the necessary power to bring about socialism.

For these reasons, DSA-SD has prioritized tenant union organizing. Our Housing Justice Working Group (HJWG) has embarked on a major campaign that aims to organize tenants throughout San Diego County. We will knock on doors, forge relationships with neighbors, and set up a network of Tenant Councils that organize for lower rents, timely maintenance, to stop landlord harassment, corner-cutting, and neglect, as well as to empower renters to understand their rights and legal protections. Against a system that places all power in the hands of landlords, we seek to build a movement in which we work together to improve our living conditions, develop our collective ability to defend ourselves and gain working class power.

No landlord is safe from the awakening power of the people, and we will not stop until San Diego becomes a beacon of socialist politics!

If you want to get involved in building power within San Diego, please reach out to our HJWG through our email (dsa.sd.housingjusticewg@gmail.com) or through their organizer In-take form.

There is no time to waste, we have a world to win!

  • Drop the Charges Against Local Activists Defending our Community!

You can sign onto this letter: https://forms.gle/rvYjfMUdyjAa5Q33A

We demand that all charges against local activists from San Diego and Los Angeles defending our community from violent far-right extremists be dropped! We denounce the unprecedented conspiracy charges and the unreasonably high bail against transgender activists.

On January 9, 2021, violent far-right extremists went to Pacific Beach to disrupt and terrorize the local community – but local activists counter-demonstrated to show that hate is not welcome in our communities. In response, not only did SDPD use force solely against the counter-demonstrators, but now almost a year later is going after local activists alleging criminal conspiracy based largely on allegations of wearing black and liking social media posts. This is obscene and tyrannical overreach, and if it succeeds, it will set a deadly precedent for people opposing hate all across the country!

Local San Diego and Los Angeles community organizations say NO to these charges, and NO to the repression of local activists. We demand the charges be dropped!

We encourage community members to support the defendants in the coming months, prioritizing their leadership in this struggle, donating to their support funds, and speaking out against the repression of local activists for defending our communities!

P.S: please lend your support by donating to their support funds: link 1, link 2, link 3, link 4, link 5, link 6

Call for Position Papers: Resolution on Jamaal Bowman

A resolution calling for the local chapter to sign onto a letter circulated by the National DSA BDS and Palestine Solidarity Working Group, has been added to the agenda of the January 23 quarterly general assembly. The letter calls for the NPC, the highest elected body within DSA, to expel Rep. J. Bowman for “his Iron Dome vote and ongoing relationship with the Zionist lobby”.

The Leadership Council is requesting that interested members submit arguments for or against signing onto the letter, to be sent out alongside the resolution. Arguments should be no more than 600 words, and sent to the Leadership Council via email sandiegodsa@gmail.com, and should be sent from the same email used for DSA registration, for verification. The deadline for position papers is 12 PM January 16.

General Assembly Voting Change for Absentee Ballots

The Leadership Council has decided to make attendance of general assemblies required for voting, unless a member requests an absentee ballot before the meeting. If you want an absentee ballot, please email the Leadership Council at sandiegodsa@gmail.com any time before the January 23 General Assembly.

Take Action – Stop the CPUC’s Net Energy Metering 3.0 Proposal

Hi comrades – it’s a new year, and new challenges lie ahead for us as we continue to fight for socialism and climate justice.

Action is urgently needed to stop the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) from moving forward with new fossil fuel friendly policy changes to rooftop solar. In a meeting as soon as January 27, 2022, the CPUC could be voting to pass a net energy metering (NEM) 3.0 proposal that is very friendly to investor-owned utilities and makes drastic cuts to the benefits of going solar.

This Net Energy Metering Proposed Decision Toolkit from the Solar Rights Alliance has some background on the issue and information on how to take action.

    Internal Organizer Vacancy

The Internal Organizer office of the leadership council is currently vacant. Anyone interested in running for the position can contact the Leadership Council via email sandiegodsa@gmail.com and a special election will be held. Candidates must satisfy the following requirements:

    1) Good-standing membership in DSA for a period of at least 2 months

    2) Have at least 2 leaders of a working group, caucus, committee, or other leadership position certify their participation in DSA, which can be demonstrated by holding any elected position, attending working group meetings or events, or by affirmation of a co-chair of any committee or working group.

  • CalCare Car Caravan

AB 1400 or CalCare is California’s single payer bill. It would create a single tax-funded health insurer that covers all Californians for all types of care without out-of-pocket costs.

Supporters of AB 1400 are organizing a day of action in Sacramento and across the state on January 8th. In San Diego we will be holding a car caravan of supporters (staying in our cars limits the risk of spreading COVID). We’ll gather at the north end of the Zoo parking lot near the Therapeutic Recreation Services Building at 3325 Zoo Drive in San Diego. Then we’ll drive downtown and circle Assemblymember Weber’s office on Front Street.

Please RSVP and join us on January 8th at 11:30!

  • HGO Investigation Conclusion

In October, San Diego Harassment Grievance Officers (HGOs) were notified by the Sacramento HGO of a potential harassment grievance against Ricky Marin, under Resolution 33. Three separate individuals eventually filed grievances against Ricky Marin. with the San Diego HGOs alleging verbal and physical abusive behavior, inappropriate sexualized comments, emotional manipulation, dishonesty, and intimidation. Due to strict confidentiality commitments made to the reporting parties and Ricky Marin, further details of the harassment will not be shared publicly, but the parties reported that the harassment occurred at various points between 2017 and 2021 and caused them harm which led to filing these grievances.

Based upon the evidence and testimony presented to the HGOs by the three reporting parties, Ricky Marin, and witness accounts as selected by each party, the San Diego DSA Leadership Council has determined that Ricky Marin engaged in harassment as defined by Resolution 33. The Leadership Council has therefore taken the following actions in regards to Ricky Marin.:

Lifetime ban on political endorsements from the DSA San Diego chapter
Lifetime ban on leadership roles within the DSA San Diego chapter
    One year suspension from DSA

These actions have been taken with consideration to the safety of the filers, the integrity and reputation of DSA chapters in San Diego and Sacramento, and the ongoing efforts of DSA to keep its members free of harassment in a safe, inclusive environment to conduct whatever business they feel necessary at all DSA meetings, events, and activities. The Leadership Council believes these actions are appropriate given the seriousness of the harassment committed by Ricky Marin.
